Punjabi Songs

I wanted to share these two songs by Tarsem Jassar: Tera Tera and My Pride. I rarely share Punjabi songs because I find that they are often contrary to our Sikh values. There's so many things that we could discuss from the Punjabi music industry, but I think the main pont is that we are influenced by what we listen to. I used to think that it doesn’t really matter what we watch on tv or listen to in our “free time” but there really is a difference. It influences your thinking, and ultimately our thoughts are what will make us mukht in this life or send us back into the cycle of reincarnation. I remember a lecturer teaching me that modern psychology tells us that even if we watch a movie that is terrifying or sad, we feel it because our minds do not distinguish that this is not happening in reality and it is just a movie. These two songs however I think really do emphasize the values that we have been given in Sikhi, and My Pride in particular talks a lot about important figures in our Sikh history.

  1. Punjabis need to go back to the Philosophy of Baba Nanak ji and our elders. Work hard and Share. I remember my mother telling me about my Great grandfather who use to live with us. My dad took care of his grandfather, then both of his parents. My dad started helping his mom at home as kid while all of his siblings went to school(even his sister got College education in India in 1960 - unthinkable at the time as girls didn't even go to village primary school in majority of cases though the trend had started). Then as he got older, he worked in the farm with his dad. My parents got married at a younger age - dad was 18, mother 16. She worked at home - from 5am to 8 or 9 depending on the season and work at the farm plus taking care of kids and older generation. I rarely saw my dad taking a day off and stay at home - almost never. Seems like he rarely got sick or he worked knowing he had. The people and animals under his care need feeding. My great grand father was born after his father's death -mother was pregnant when the father died in a farm accident. GGF was raised by his mother with an Iron work ethic. He bought huge chunks of land -never spent a dime on anything. But tried to give Sons a best possible life at the time - one even studied in an English school My mom tells me GGF refused to have his clothes washed - saying the fiber will break(Cotton clothes)

She and her husband went to London as Students - for some reason she was unable to complete her course - she had kid- they came back home. Farmers. She decided to earn income- She has a diary - She cleans, feeds. milks buffaloes the OLD way like my mom use to. She drives tractor in the fields, rides horses, motorcycle, edits blogs, Swims

  3. Female students, especially international students have bigger hurdles as compare to males in obtaining their Permanent residency. Mostly Punjabis from middle or lower class come to stay and work in Canada permanently. Boys can do harder labor(Construction, drive trucks, earn more and get their PR easily whereas girls in majority of cases can't). In majority of the time boys also don't face sexual harassment. Some students move around, go to a place where it's easier to apply like the Prairie provinces like Manitoba, Saskatchewan etc. This is a story of a 23 year old who got her education in Toronto, got her work visa but traveled to Saskatoon so it will easier for her to get her pr. She lived in her cousin's basement - The Cousin and her husband had some martial issue. This girl was murdered in the basement by the Cousin's husband
